Who we are, Bank edition

There’s a bank I pass now and then on my weekly travels, a branch of Integrity Bank.

What does it say about the people we are that “Integrity Bank” sounds like a smart brand name for a financial services company, rather than the most ridiculous sort of redundancy imaginable?

How silly would it be, for example, to name a bank “Money Bank?” You can hear people say “Money Bank? Of course it has money, it’s a bank! What other kind of bank is there?”

And yet, try to imagine the same people saying “Integrity Bank? Of course it has integrity, it’s a bank! What other kind of bank is there?”

Indeed.

I will be very clear and say that I’m not in any way trying to chide or ridicule Integrity Bank. I am totally unfamiliar with them, I don’t use their services at all, and so I can’t comment on them directly. I hope they take their name very seriously, and good for them if they do.

What I am trying to say is, what kind of a people are we that “Integrity Bank” actually is a smart brand name in this country and culture (because I think it is)? What kind of a world have we made for ourselves, in which this is true?
